Zmojdzin Named 1st Team, Magliano Honored As Coach Of Year

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Mark Zmojdzin was named the first first-team all-conference player in Roosevelt men's volleyball history Thursday when the Great Lakes Valley Conference announced its all-conference honors.

The Prospect Heights, Ill. native was a first-team choice in the GLVC after leading the league with 357 total kills and finishing second with 3.8 kills per set. In league play, Zmojdzin was even better with 4.0 kills per set and a league-leading 212 total kills.

The two-time Offensive Player of the Week broke the career record for kills in program history early in the season. He then went on to record the most kills in a Roosevelt uniform in a single-season as well as set a new program single-game record with 25 against Quincy on March 28.

"Mark is so deserving of every award and recognition this season," said Roosevelt head coach Kelly Magliano. "His journey within our program has proven that with hard work, positivity and trust, you can achieve the utmost success, and assist in helping the program grow. Mark's impact on our program is long-lasting, and we are happy this recognition can put the cherry on top of a historic season."

Magliano also made history when she was named the co-Coach of the Year by her peers in the eight-team league alongside Missouri S&T's Ryan Thompson. Her fifth full season in charge of the Lakers resulted in a 16-win campaign and a spot in the GLVC Tournament that begins Saturday in St. Louis. Roosevelt outperformed its preseason prediction of fifth in the conference and placed five of its seven main starters on one of the two all-conference teams.

After starting as a graduate assistant for the program when it was still at Robert Morris University, Magliano has been a part of all six seasons of men's volleyball at Roosevelt as an assistant or head coach. The 16 victories are the most in her tenure at Roosevelt and it is the first time the Lakers will finish with a winning record.

"I am humbled to have received recognition from the conference as Co-Coach of the Year, alongside my friend Ryan Thompson," Magliano said. "He is a wonderful coach and leads his program with integrity and I am grateful to be in the same category he is.

"I would also like to give credit to past and present Lakers. Since starting here in 2021, our teams have trusted the vision of the program and knew the potential we could get realize. The current roster has built up from that foundation laid and proved we can achieve our goals together. This honor is for all of us."

In addition to Zmojdzin, four Lakers were named to the All-GLVC second team this season – Martino Bertagnoli, Kajetan Bieniek, Simone Mondin and Jonathan Stovring.

Bertagnoli was the Lakers' main setter and finished with 760 assists, the most by a player in a Roosevelt uniform. The sophomore added 52 kills, 10 aces and 32 blocks to his totals in his first season of college volleyball after missing last season due to injury.

For the second straight season, Bieniek amassed at least 200 kills, finishing with 207 across the 82 sets he played. The sophomore also led the team with 24 aces from the service line and added 20 blocks to his presence at the net.

Mondin led the entire GLVC with 2.78 digs per set and 145 overall digs in conference play, anchoring the Lakers defense as a freshman libero. Meanwhile at the net, Jonathan Stovring ranked fourth in the league with a .404 hitting percentage in conference play and third in the GLVC with a .420 hitting percentage overall. The junior middle blocker also led the team with 65 total blocks and ranked third on the roster with 174 kills.

"We are so proud of all our student-athletes that have received All-GLVC recognition," Magliano said. "Martino experienced a great deal of adversity last season, having to deal with injury. Not once did he lose positivity or sight of his goals. Martino is one of the toughest players I have had the pleasure of coaching.

"Kaj is incredibly dedicated to hard work, growth and the sport of volleyball, and we are excited the GLVC recognized this. Simone has grown as a player and person this season, and has had a standout freshman season. We are fortunate to have him as part of our program. Jon has been an integral part of both our offense and defense this season. His leadership and work ethic has contributed significantly to our overall success as a program."

Junior Yeban Youn was named as Roosevelt's recipient of the James R. Spaulding Sportsmanship Award for his conduct on the court.
