Zmojdzin Shines In Senior Day Triumph

CHICAGO – Roosevelt officially qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament in two weeks with a straight-sets win over Jamestown on Saturday at the Goodman Center.

The Lakers began the day by honoring their lone senior – Mark Zmojdzin – and the Prospect Heights, Ill. native delivered. He led Roosevelt with 16 kills and hit .379 while being part of four blocks to guarantee the Lakers (16-8, 8-4 GLVC) a top-four finish in the league.

Zmojdzin opened up with five kills on eight swings in the first set then added six more kills in the second set. He finished with five more kills in the third set to give him 326 kills this season, by far the most in a single season by anyone in a Roosevelt uniform.

Roosevelt never trailed in the match and there were five ties total across the three sets, however, there were moments of brief panic. They mostly came in the first set when the Jimmies came back from 17-10 down to tie the set at 19. Zmojdzin responded by putting away a kill then Braxton McGonigle came on to serve up an ace as Roosevelt claimed six of the final eight points to take the first set 25-21.

There were no such issues in the second set as Roosevelt took control with a 5-0 run that featured two kills from Kajetan Bieniek to take a 16-8 lead. The Lakers would prevail 25-19 in the second set with Zmojdzin delivering the final blow with a kill. Zmojdzin then set up Roosevelt for success in the third set with his serve, punctuating a long run of serves with an ace to give the Lakers a 7-1 lead. Roosevelt led the rest of the way to win the match with a 25-16 victory in the third set.

Bieniek added 12 kills for the Lakers and no one else mustered more than four kills. Roosevelt again hit double-digit blocks with 10 stuffs with Jonathan Stovring a part of four and Ashton Stage again leading the way with five total blocks. Martino Bertagnoli had 24 assists and finished with a team-best nine digs. Meanwhile, Roosevelt held Jamestown to .087 hitting in the match, the worst hitting percentage a team has had against the Lakers in nearly three months.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt heads to Kansas City, Mo. for the final two matches of the regular season against Rockhurst on Friday and Saturday.
