KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Roosevelt dropped its regular-season finale Saturday to Rockhurst in a tight four-set match in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Lakers (16-10, 8-6 GLVC) lost the opening set 25-20, but they seemed to have rebounded to claim the second set. For a moment, Roosevelt won the set at 25-23 behind seven kills from Mark Zmojdzin, but a lengthy review overturned the call on the court, tying the set at 24. The Lakers had two more set points – including one after an eighth kill for Zmojdzin – before the Hawks edged out a 28-26 win.
Rockhurst began the third set with the momentum and raced out to an early five-point edge. The Hawks led 20-16 when a service error gave the Lakers the opening they needed. Zmojdzin and Ashton Stage rose up for a block on the next point and Zmojdzin followed with a kill to cut the deficit to one.
After a Roosevelt attack error, Zmojdzin tied the set with consecutive kills, picking up momentum at the right time. The senior then staved off match point with a kill before ending the set a few points later with a kill to make it 27-25 Roosevelt. Zmojdzin finished with nine kills in the third set and a team-best 20 kills overall in the match.
The Hawks shut down the Lakers in the fourth set, running away with a 25-8 victory to claim the match. Martino Bertagnoli recorded 42 assists in the match for the Lakers while Kajetan Bieniek led Roosevelt with 12 digs, three more than the nine from Simone Mondin. Jonathan Stovring added nine kills on the attack for the Lakers.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will be the No. 4 seed in next week's GLVC Tournament and will face top-seeded Maryville on Saturday at 3 p.m. in St. Louis. The Saints took a pair of four-set matches against Roosevelt at the beginning of April at the Goodman Center.
