BAY CITY, Mich. – After taking down a Division I opponent on Sunday, freshman Juan Caicedo was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
The Colombian joined the Lakers for the spring semester and made an instant impact at the top of the lineup. He is the first Roosevelt tennis player to be honored by the GLIAC since the Lakers made the transition to NCAA Division II. Caicedo is also just the second male player to be honored during head coach Dominic DeNardo's tenure at Roosevelt.
"Juan came in the spring ready to work and five everything he has to the program," DeNardo said. "He continues to grow every day while bringing the intensity that helps his teammates grow around him. He is a natural leader that will accomplish many achievements on and off the court in the years ahead."
This past weekend, Caicedo went 3-0 in singles matches with victories over opponents from Rose-Hulman, Hope and UIC. On Friday, the freshman won a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 battle against Rose-Hulman before coming back for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the top singles player at Hope.
His best match, though, came Sunday at XS Tennis when Caicedo dominated at the No. 1 singles position against Division I UIC. The freshman won 6-4, 6-1 to secure Roosevelt's only point against the Flames in the Lakers' only loss of the three-match weekend.
Caicedo and Justus Peters teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot as well, finishing with a 2-1 mark over the weekend. The pair had Roosevelt's only doubles victory against Rose-Hulman before dropping a tight set against Hope. They responded with a 6-1 beatdown against UIC to again secure the only doubles victory for the Lakers.
