WHITEWATER, Wis. – One year after being blanked by Wisconsin Whitewater, the Roosevelt men's tennis team rallied in singles play for a 5-2 win over the Warhawks on the road Saturday.
The Lakers started off doubles strong with a 6-3 win from Juan Caicedo and Justus Peters at the No. 1 position. However, the Warhawks came back to claim Nos. 2 and 3 to take an early 1-0 lead. As the teams transitioned into singles play, Roosevelt came alive by claiming the first set in five of the six matches.
Peters was the first to finish off his opponent, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 to tie the match at one apiece. Demille Scarabello followed up his 6-4 win in the first set with a 6-1 victory in the second to make it 2-1 with a win at No. 6. The Warhawks tied the match by winning the fifth singles spot, but Juan Pablo Espinosa claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to move the Lakers within a victory of the dual.
Jules Rumeau delivered with a 6-4, 7-6 win at the No. 3 flight, taking the second-set tiebreaker 7-5 for the fourth point. Caicedo then took his third-set supertiebreaker 10-5 after two tight sets at the top singles position to claim victory. The freshman won the first set 7-6 with an 8-6 win in the tiebreak before dropping the second set 7-5.
The women did not have the same luck, falling 4-3 to UW Whitewater in a tightly-contested battle. This time, Roosevelt claimed the doubles point by winning the second and third doubles positions.
Sophie Christie and Zeynep Barut cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles before Malena Moya and Ximena Mercado dropped a tight match at the top spot. Nathalie Ramazzini and Luciana Trigosso, though, teamed up to eke out a 7-5 win at No. 3 to give Roosevelt a 1-0 lead.
UW Whitewater claimed victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles in short order, but Roosevelt responded with wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Barut ran through her foe for a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 and Milena Novikova raced to a 6-1 win in the first set before gutting out a 7-5 win in the second set at No. 5. The Warhawks also won the fourth singles position in straight sets to set up the winner-take-all match at No. 1 singles.
Christie won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-1 for the only three-set match of the afternoon on the women's side. After a tough battle, the Warhawks claimed the third set 6-4 to take the match.
