Lakers Bow Out Of GLIAC Tourney Against Warriors

MIDLAND, Mich. – Roosevelt made an impact in its first appearance at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament with a 4-1 loss to third-seeded Wayne State on Thursday at the Midland Tennis Center in Michigan.

Less than two weeks after the teams met in Detroit, the Lakers and Warriors squared off in the first round of the conference tournament. It was easy to see improvements from Roosevelt in the scorelines with many of the individual matchups staying the same. Roosevelt's chance at repeating its win at No. 1 doubles was halted early after Wayne State collected wins at the other two doubles positions. The Lakers switched its pairings' positions in the lineup, but it still resulted in two tough losses to a top-40 team.

In singles action, Lluc Mascaro Sierra wasted no time in taking care of his opponent at the No. 6 position with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 performance. The effort tied the match at one, but left the Lakers needing three other standout performances. Justus Peters fought a valiant first set in a 7-5 defeat at No. 2 singles after winning just one game combined against the same Warriors opponent two weeks earlier. Juan Caicedo lost 6-2, 6-3 at the top singles flight again, showing improvement after winning just two games in the first meeting of the year.

The Lakers dropped the first sets of the other three singles matches and Wayne State was able to collect wins at Nos. 3 and 4 to secure the victory in the tournament.
