CHICAGO – Roosevelt's Senior Day festivities featured a piece of history as the Lakers men's tennis team won its first ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday against Michigan Tech.
The men rallied in singles to defeat the Huskies 4-3 while the women were clipped 5-2 in their match with Michigan Tech. Â The victory was sealed in a raucous atmosphere at XS Tennis with the entire Lakers bench swarming Jules Rumeau after he finished off a three-set win at No. 3 singles.
Rumeau was in control in the opening set with a 6-2 triumph, but his opponent responded with a 6-2 win to force the deciding set. The freshman jumped up on his opponent in the third set and sealed the 6-2 win after his foe dumped a volley into the net. It capped off four Roosevelt wins in singles after Michigan Tech barely took the doubles point.
All three doubles matches on the men's side were extremely close with two decided in tiebreakers and the Huskies winning 7-5 at the No. 1 flight. Demille Scarabello and Abhay Singh battled for a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles then Chakib Madcur and Lluc Mascaro Sierra were edged 7-6 at No. 3 after losing the tiebreaker 8-6.
Juan Caicedo started singles off well for the Lakers at the No. 1 position, claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win to tie the match. The Lakers dropped points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but dominated the second sets at both the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Scarabello turned up the pressure with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5 then Madcur blitzed to a 7-5, 6-1 win at the sixth position.
Roosevelt also dropped the doubles point in the women's match despite Nathalie Ramazzini and Luciana Trigosso gutting out a 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles by winning the tiebreak 10-8. Milena Novikova continued her strong start to the spring with a victory at No. 4 singles after her opponent retired with Novikova leading 7-5, 2-0. The Lakers' other point came from Ramazzini, who went the distance at No. 5 singles in a marathon 7-6 (8), 2-6, 15-13 win.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt has just one match next week as both teams travel to Hammond, Ind. to face Purdue Northwest on Saturday.
