Windham Leads Lakers To Exhibition Win

CHICAGO – Roosevelt put itself into high gear over the final 30 minutes for an emphatic 89-68 win over East-West on Friday in an exhibition matchup at the Goodman Center.

The visiting Phantoms led by as many as seven in the first half by capitalizing on the Lakers' inefficiencies on offense. Around the midway point of the first half, the Lakers were shooting less than 27 percent from the field while East-West was dominating the glass. However, Roosevelt turned the game around with a 13-0 run over a five-minute stretch towards the end of the first half and rode the momentum into a seven-point lead at the intermission while shooting 38 percent for the half.

That momentum quickly took hold in the second half with six quick points in the opening minute of the half, capped off by forcing a shot-clock violation from East-West. The Lakers led by as many as 27 in the second half as they continued to feast in transition and ended the game with 39 points off 28 Phantoms turnovers.

Jalen Windham shone in his Roosevelt debut with 35 points and five steals to lead the Lakers in both categories. Windham made 14 of 23 from the field, including 7 of 14 from behind the arc, to carry the scoring load for the Lakers. Kaleim Taylor chipped in 14 points and Kobe Reed and Dante Sawyer each added 11 points as well.

In a positive change from last season, Roosevelt had 22 assists as a team, which is more than it recorded in any game last season. Six different players had at least three assists with Sawyer leading the team with five helpers. Davon Smith-Johnson paced Roosevelt on the glass with seven rebounds as the Lakers trimmed the rebounding deficit to 37-32 by the end of the game.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt's season begins next weekend in Kenosha, Wis. with a pair of games against Great Lakes Valley Conference foes at Parkside. The Lakers take on UIS on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before facing Upper Iowa at 3:30 on Saturday.
