Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

West Shines In Senior Day Setback

CHICAGO – Roosevelt celebrated its four seniors Saturday afternoon, but came out on the wrong end of a 79-65 game against Purdue Northwest in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Goodman Center.

The game started very slowly with neither team able to score for more than two minutes before the Pride hit a pair of free throws. Purdue Northwest would end up scoring the first seven points of the game and grew to as many as 22 midway through the opening half. However, Roosevelt (4-21, 3-15 GLIAC) found its rhythm late in the half and close to within 12 with three minutes to go.

The second half turned into Mikey West's playground as the senior showed off in his final game at the Goodman Center. He scored 19 of his 22 points in the final 20 minutes, attacking the rim at will to try and will the Lakers back into the game. It nearly worked as well as West took over for the Lakers after the Pride stretched their lead to the maximum of 27.

West assisted on fellow senior Dante Sawyer's 3-pointer then found Hamahrie Bowers as he cut through the lane before getting fouled. In total over the final 12:36, West had a hand in all but two of Roosevelt's field goals – both of which came after he exited the game to a standing ovation. The Connecticut native had four helpers in the second half and made 10 of 12 at the free throw line as Roosevelt closed to within 17 with nine minutes left in regulation.

Sawyer finished with eight points and five rebounds after being honored pregame along with West and the injured Kaleim Taylor and Griffin Yaklich. Mason Kleinsmith and Davon Smith-Johnson had 10 points each while Bowers scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards before being ejected for a flagrant foul in the second half.

UP NEXT: The Lakers close out their season in the Upper Peninsula next weekend, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. battle against Northern Michigan.
