Lakers Drop Shootout To Warriors At Home

CHICAGO – Hamahrie Bowers entered rarified air Thursday evening, but it was not enough to prevent Roosevelt from dropping a back-and-forth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest to Wayne State at the Goodman Center.

The junior from Chicago made 13 of 19 from the floor and scored 36 points, the third-most by a player in program history. Mikey West added 20 points and Dante Sawyer chipped in 17, but Wayne State was able to hold on for a 92-85 win. With the loss, Roosevelt was officially eliminated from postseason contention.

Both teams shot 50 percent or better from the field and the lead changed hands five times and the game was tied on five other occasions as well. However, Roosevelt (4-20, 3-14 GLIAC) was never able to fully rally in the second half after entering the locker room down six.

The Lakers certainly tried their best by attacking the rim and opening up the perimeter shots when they were available. Bowers was 8 of 12 from the field in the second half and made all five free throws for 22 points and West dropped 16 of his points over the final 20 minutes as well. As a team, the Lakers shot better than 56 percent in the second half and made 4 of 10 from behind the arc all while being a perfect 12 for 12 from the free-throw line.

Roosevelt was able to cut the Wayne State lead to four several times in the middle of the second half, but that was as close as it would get. A Mason Kleinsmith layup made it a five-point game with two minutes left, but a flurry of offensive rebounds allowed the Warriors to finally score on their next possession.

Bowers and Sawyer easily led the way for Roosevelt on the glass with nine and eight rebounds, respectively, but the Lakers still dropped the rebounding battle 38-29. Kleinsmith earned the start in place of Kaleim Taylor and scored six points to go along with six assists and two steals. West had four helpers as well as the Lakers lost for just the second time when finishing with at least 15 assists after sharing the ball for 17 helpers Thursday.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will celebrate their four seniors on Saturday prior to the 3 p.m. tipoff with Purdue Northwest at the Goodman Center. The halftime festivities will also include recognition for the seniors on the Lakers national-champion cheer and dance teams as well as the two seniors in the Lakers Band.
