Roxy Herrera Earns First GLIAC Weekly Honor

BAY CITY, Mich. – Senior goalkeeper Roxy Herrera was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Lakers to a resounding 3-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday.

It is the first career GLIAC weekly award for Herrera, who has returned from injury without skipping a beat. This past weekend, the Chicago native made four saves in a tough 1-0 loss to Saginaw Valley State, but bounced back with six stops to help the Lakers power past the Pride. The shutout was her second of the season and the 11th of her career, extending her career record for clean sheets.

"We are all extremely happy and proud of Roxy for earning this much deserved accolade, especially since she missed the majority of this season due to injury," Roosevelt head coach Tom Czop said. "She has not missed a beat in goal since her return and has provided experienced and valuable leadership as well."

Herrera has been sparkling since returning to the field for the Lakers from a preseason injury. In five matches, she has a 1.40 goals against average and .844 save percentage while keeping the two shutouts. She's also made 38 saves already this season to bring her within 24 stops of reaching 300 in her career.

Last season, Herrera was named an All-GLIAC honorable mention performer after finishing the regular season fourth in the country with 130 saves and ninth nationwide with 7.65 saves per game. She is on nearly the exact same pace this season with 7.6 saves per game while navigating the Lakers to a 2-3-0 mark.

Roosevelt will head out this week on its nearly-annual trip to the Upper Peninsula to face Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. The Lakers and Wildcats will face off Friday at 10 a.m. in the first half of a Roosevelt-Northern Michigan soccer doubleheader. They will then continue on to Houghton for an 11 a.m. matchup Sunday with the Huskies.
