HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt was clinical with its scoring chances in a 3-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Hammond, Ind.
The Pride may have had the 9-4 edge in shot attempts, but the Lakers (4-8-1, 2-7-1 GLIAC) made the most of their attacks with all four shots landing on frame. Roosevelt's only shot of the first half came off a gorgeous pass from
Carisma Rosales to put
Cami Butler into space. The sophomore took one touch and sent an arcing shot over the Purdue Northwest goalie in the 32
nd minute.
A mistake from the Pride in the second half allowed the Lakers to easily double their lead just two minutes into the half. Purdue Northwest played a short goal kick, but
Daisy Hernandez-Loya was quick to apply pressure and force a turnover. The senior took one touch to separate herself then fired the shot into the goal.
Rosales added her fourth goal of the season to her earlier assist with a stunning individual effort that has become her hallmark this season. The sophomore from Berwyn tracked back to steal the ball from the Pride on Roosevelt's half of the field then was off to the races. She dribbled her way to the top of the penalty area before a defender challenged her, and Rosales simply cut inside and unleashed a laser into the upper-left corner.
Although the Lakers were outshot in the game, senior
Roxy Herrera was calm and collected in goal for Roosevelt with six saves. The Chicago native made four stops in the first half then added two more in the second to keep a second clean sheet in five appearances this season since returning from injury.
UP NEXT: The Lakers are headed to Michigan's Upper Peninsula next week for matchups at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
