MARQUETTE, Mich. – Roosevelt could not overcome a halftime deficit as Northern Michigan pulled away for a 5-1 win over the Lakers on Friday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The Wildcats scored less than five minutes into the match before the Lakers settled into the game and started applying their own pressure. Northern Michigan added a second goal with about 10 minutes left in the first half while holding a 14-6 edge in shot attempts in the first half.
Down two at the intermission, the Lakers (4-9-1, 2-8-1 GLIAC) came out on the attack in the second half and it almost immediately paid off. The Roosevelt defense blocked a crossing attempt into the offensive third, and the ball bounced out to
Carisma Rosales. The sophomore had yet another marvelous individual effort to weave through the Wildcats midfield before picking up team-high fourth assist of the season.
After creating an odd-man situation for the Lakers, Rosales threaded a perfect pass to
Daisy Hernandez-Loya right outside the penalty area. The senior took one touch to steady herself then unleashed a right-footed strike that escaped the grasp of the Northern Michigan keeper. It was Hernandez-Loya's fifth goal of the season and her second straight game with a tally.
Roosevelt's momentum proved to be short-lived as less than two minutes after pulling within one, Northern Michigan scored to increase the lead to two. The Wildcats then added goals in the 63
rd and 73
rd minutes to finish off the scoring.
Roxy Herrera made six saves for the Lakers as Northern Michigan ended the match with a 27-11 edge in shot attempts and an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal.
