Rosales Powers Lakers Into Postseason Position

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Carisma Rosales scored both goals to help guide Roosevelt to the brink of the postseason in a 2-0 win over Michigan Tech on Sunday in Michigan.

With the win, the Lakers moved into seventh place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a one-point lead over Purdue Northwest and a three-point edge over Michigan Tech. Roosevelt just needs one point from either of its last two matches to qualify for the conference tournament by assuring itself a top-eight finish. The Lakers will also qualify if Purdue Northwest loses or ties Thursday against Northern Michigan.

Roosevelt (5-9-1, 3-8-1 GLIAC) survived the opening-half assault from Michigan Tech on Sunday with Roxy Herrera making four saves in the first 45 minutes. The Huskies held a 12-5 edge in shot attempts in the first half in a critical game for both teams' postseason hopes. However, the Lakers turned on the pressure in the second half and wore down the Huskies.

Rosales finally broke through for the game's first goal in the 61st minute courtesy of some strong midfield play from the Lakers. Lainey Canan won a battle with the Huskies just outside the midfield circle, and was poked the ball away into the path of Daisy Garcia. The junior controlled the ball and crossed the midfield line before firing a through pass for Rosales 30 yards from goal. Rosales settled the ball and created space for herself then unleashed a low drive from 25 yards out that comfortably found the lower-left corner.

The Lakers added an insurance tally with less than 90 seconds to go in the half with some quick work to flip the field. Herrera fielded a misguided pass from Michigan Tech and quickly punted the ball upfield. Bella Perry got her head on the ball near the midfield circle then Daisy Hernandez-Loya sealed off her defender and flicked the ball onto Rosales. The sophomore drove the ball deep into the penalty area before cutting back and sliding in her sixth goal of the season.

The second goal was invaluable to the Lakers as they tied up the second tiebreaker with the Huskies should it be needed. Roosevelt and Michigan Tech not only split the season series, but now also are equal on goals scored in the two games, which would bring a two-way tie to the third tiebreaker – most points earned per game against the highest seeded team in the conference tournament until the tie is broken.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt faces a steep test in its next match Thursday with a trip to No. 5 Grand Valley State for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
