Roosevelt Secures Postseason Spot Despite Loss

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt received the help it needed to secure a spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament despite a 7-0 loss to No. 6 Grand Valley State on Thursday in Michigan.

The match began with Roosevelt (5-10-1, 3-9-1 GLIAC) having already secured its spot in the conference tournament thanks to Purdue Northwest's loss earlier in the day. However, the Lakers were still looking to make a statement against the GLIAC champions in hopes of moving up in the conference pecking order. However, Grand Valley State scored twice in the opening five minutes to set the tone for the match.

Roosevelt was able to get to halftime with the deficit still at 2-0, but the floodgates opened in the 59th minute for the hosts. Grand Valley State scored four times in 5:07 to turn the match into a rout then added a 90th-minute tally for the final score.

Roxy Herrera made six saves in goal for Roosevelt while the Lakers were outshot 30-2 by the hosts. Daisy Garcia had Roosevelt's first shot of the match in the 66th minute and forced a save from the Grand Valley State keeper. Carisma Rosales followed with a shot two minutes later that was blocked by the defense.

With one match remaining, Roosevelt can finish anywhere from sixth to eighth in the conference standings depending on Saturday's results. The Lakers can secure at least the seven seed with a win over Ferris State, but can move up to the sixth seed with a win and a Davenport loss. Michigan Tech hosts Purdue Northwest in a match that also holds great significance for the Lakers, who have a one-point edge on the Pride and three-point advantage over the Huskies.

In the case of tiebreakers, Roosevelt holds the tiebreaker over Davenport due to its win last month and also holds the edge on Purdue Northwest by outscoring the Pride 3-1 in the season series. The tiebreaker with Michigan Tech is dependent on the final GLIAC standings. The Lakers hold the edge if Ferris State ranks higher than Parkside, and the Huskies would have the edge if Parkside finishes higher than Ferris State.

UP NEXT: The Lakers end the regular season Saturday at noon against Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich.
