CALEDONIA, Mich. – A pair of goals in the final six minutes were enough to propel Roosevelt to its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win in program history on Friday with a 2-0 triumph over Davenport in Michigan.
The match was heavily skewed in the Lakers' favor early with Roosevelt holding an 8-2 edge in shot attempts in the first half. However, the game remained goalless at halftime and the Panthers started to apply pressure of their own. Davenport had 12 attempts in the second half, and all five that made it on goal were stopped by senior
Roxy Herrera.
Herrera's return was massive for the Lakers (3-5-1, 1-4-1 GLIAC) and the 2024 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection finished with six saves in her season debut. The clean sheet was her 10
th career shutout, extending her school record in her 44
th career start in the Green & White. Â
Carisma Rosales made sure the game did not end scoreless with yet another fantastic individual effort late in the match. After a string of throw-ins deep in the Davenport half of the field, Rosales easily dribbled past a defender then split another pair as she made it to the edge of the penalty area.
She attempted to thread a pass behind the defense, but the ball was blocked and found its way back to Rosales, who turned and sent a shot just out of the Davenport goalie's reach. The 85
th minute tally was Rosales' third goal of the season and came after the sophomore missed last week's loss to Parkside due to a red card suspension.
Roosevelt was not satisfied with clinging to a one-goal lead and outworked the Panthers for another goal. After
Daisy Garcia was upended near midfield,
Bella Perry sent a long free kick into the box where
Daisy Hernandez-Loya was unable to steer her header on goal. However, while the Panthers were content to let the ball roll out of bounds,
Alex Creel sprinted to the end line and saved the ball.
Creel was able to play a pass to Hernandez-Loya, who then slotted a centering pass to
Lesly Guerra for the Lakers' second goal. It was the first career goal for the freshman, who played a season-high 41 minutes, and came on Guerra's third shot of the season.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt continues its road trip on Sunday at Saginaw Valley State as the Lakers pulled into the final spot in the conference tournament as we approach the midway point of the GLIAC slate.
