UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Roosevelt could not overcome a second-half flurry in a 4-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State on Sunday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Michigan.
The Cardinals were on the attack early in the match, putting a shot on
Roxy Herrera less than a minute into the contest. They then hit the post twice off a free kick just five minutes in, but the Lakers were able to regroup and mount their own offensive. The attack eventually led to
Lainey Canan looping a cross into the box where
Kenna Wisniewski volleyed it with her right foot for a goal a little more than eight minutes into the match.
Saginaw Valley State tied the match around the halfway point of the first half, but Herrera made five saves to keep the game tied entering halftime. The Cardinals held a 15-4 advantage in shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes, but the difference was just 6-2 in shots on goal.
In the 61
st minute, Herrera dove to her right for a save on a point-blank opportunity, but the ball found its way into the back of the net in the ensuing scramble. The senior keeper added five more saves in the second half to keep the Lakers in the game, but two late Cardinals goals stopped any hope of a comeback.
Herrera finished with 10 saves as the Cardinals ended up with a 27-8 edge in shot attempts. IN addition to Wisniewski's goal, the only other shots on goal for the Lakers came from
Daisy Hernandez-Loya and
Olivia Lange.
UP NEXT: The Lakers have the next week off before hosting No. 3 Grand Valley State on Sunday at noon in Arlington Heights.
