ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – A corner kick that bent its way into the upper-right corner was the difference in a 1-0 loss for Roosevelt on Friday afternoon against Saginaw Valley State at Morris Field.
The two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes could not be separate in the first half with the Cardinals holding a slim 8-6 edge in shot attempts.
Carisma Rosales drove the Lakers' attack in the opening 45 minutes by putting herself in good scoring position twice. There were also several great opportunities around the box that Roosevelt (3-8-1, 1-7-1 GLIAC) could not capitalize upon.
Roxy Herrera rebounded from a tough game against the Cardinals two weeks ago in Michigan with four saves in Friday's rematch. The senior from Chicago made a couple of stops at point-blank range, but was arguably more impressive by how she controlled her area in the air. The Cardinals struggled to generate many chances off crosses and corner kicks because of how well Herrera soared through the air to intercept balls.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, some wind gusts and perfectly-angled spin allowed the Cardinals to strike in the 62
nd minute with an Olimpico. As Herrera prepared herself to attack the corner kick, it slowly curled its way away from everyone and into the corner. It was one of 12 shots Saginaw Valley State hurled Herrera's way in the second half, but only one other attempt made its way on goal.
Roosevelt had plenty of chances to counterattack against the Cardinals, but it resulted in only five shot attempts in the second half. Rosales had a well-struck shot stopped in the 63
rd minute, but otherwise, the Lakers could not get on the end of passes to attempt a shot despite putting pressure on the Cardinals.
UP NEXT: The Lakers finish the season with five consecutive road contests beginning Sunday when they make the short drive to Purdue Northwest for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
