Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Roosevelt didn't make it easy on itself yet again, but the Lakers did find a way to extend their winning streak to six games with a 71-68 victory over Governors State on Saturday in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest in University Park.
The Lakers (7-3, 6-1 CCAC) actually led by a point at the intermission then came out of the break looking to assume full control of the game. Roosevelt made it look effortless during a 12-0 run that lasted 2:41 and broke a 40-40 deadlock within the first two minutes of the second half. However, the Jaguars responded with a 13-2 run of their own and clamped down on defense.
After Yuri Swinford closed out the 12-0 run with a jump shot, the Lakers made just one field goal in the next 9:14, a drought ended by another Swinford jumper. The graduate transfer came alive in the second half for Roosevelt, scoring 17 of his team-best 24 points over the final 20 minutes of the game. He scored 10 of Roosevelt's last 17 points in the game and assisted on the only other two field goals over the final 13 minutes of action.
Swinford finished with eight rebounds and four assists as well with five of those boards and three assists coming in the second half. Julio Montes II also played a large role in the victory with 17 points and season-best seven assists for the freshman. Ayo Ajiboye rounded out the Lakers in double figures with 10 points, including the key layup with 1:08 remaining that were the final points of the game.
Although the Lakers offense wasn't as efficient in the second half as it has been in past games, the defense did its part. Roosevelt limited Governors State to just 11 of 27 shooting in the second half, holding the Jaguars scoreless on key possessions down the stretch with lockdown defending. It was a continuation from the first half when the Lakers held the Jaguars to just 40 percent shooting.
Governors State led by as many as eight points in the first half when a slew of turnovers plagued Roosevelt. The Lakers went on a 9-1 run in the middle of the half to tie the game then the lead jockeyed back and forth until Montes hit a jump shot with 4:51 remaining in the period to give Roosevelt the lead for the rest of the first half. Roosevelt trailed for a total of 35 seconds in the second half, twice overturning slim one-point deficits on the very next possession.
The Lakers' chance to extend the winning streak to seven comes Thursday night at the Goodman Center when Roosevelt welcomes Moody Bible Institute for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
