CHICAGO – Trinity International broke open a close game late in the second half to pull away from the Roosevelt men's basketball team, 80-72, at the Goodman Center on Saturday.
Brian Kern had a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Josh Redic added 12 points for the Lakers (7-19, 7-11 CCAC).
Matt Myers and Mark Johnson added 10 points apiece.
Diamond Presniakovas led all players with 14 points, while Jeremy Bonifacio had 13 points and 10 assists for the Trojans (5-18, 4-14 CCAC), who shot 55 percent (31-for-56) for the game while the Lakers struggled with their shooting, particularly in the second half. Roosevelt connected at 37 percent (23-for-62) for the game while making just 10 of 33 after intermission.
Roosevelt led by as many as seven during the first half and, after TIU rallied back, the Lakers trailed by just one at the break.
The two teams continued to engage in a close battle for much of the second half, with the Lakers holding one-possession leads in the middle of the half before Trinity International reclaimed a slim advantage.
Buoyed by 44 points in the paint that reflected high-percentage shots and negated its 12-for-25 showing at the charity stripe, TIU started to pull away during the game's late stages as Roosevelt made just two buckets during the final five minutes of regulation. The Lakers missed eight other attempts from the floor during that span as the guests were able to maintain their lead until the final horn as RU's offense went frigid at an inopportune time.
"TIU simply outplayed us all day and really gave us a gift by only going 12-for-25 from the stripe," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "Their drives and interior play killed us, and on offense we were cold, especially in the second half.
"We have another big week next week, so we'll look to improve each day."
