Big Second Half Propels Men's Basketball Past Governors State

CHICAGO – Josh Redic led all scorers with 23 points on an efficient shooting night while Matt Myers led a huge second-half effort by the Roosevelt men's basketball team, as the Lakers outscored visiting Governors State 49-29 in the final period to overcome an intermission deficit and defeat the Jaguars, 84-72, inside the Goodman Center on Wednesday night.

Redic shot 6-for-7 from the field, making all four of his three-point attempts, and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe to finish one point off his career high and pace the Lakers (6-15, 6-7 CCAC) to their second straight win and fourth in the last five games.

Myers scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and pulled down six rebounds, while Brian Kern contributed 14 points and six boards.

Chris Pride pace GSU (13-7, 8-5 CCAC) with 17 points.

Governors State led by as many as nine in the opening period and took a 43-35 lead into the break.

From there it was all Roosevelt, as the Lakers shot 52 percent from the field and held the Jaguars to just 6-for-29 (21 percent) shooting in the game's final 20 minutes.

Myers was the second-half catalyst with his post-intermission point production on 5-for-6 shooting, and Roosevelt jumped out to a 19-4 run to open the final stanza to stun the guests.

The Lakers went up by as many as 10 points in the second, and GSU could only get within six with a little under six minutes remaining in regulation as Roosevelt made life miserable for the Jaguars on both ends of the court.

"What a second half," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "We took better care of the ball and really locked up in the second half, and to hold them to 32 percent shooting was the biggest factor in the win.

"Several individuals were outstanding tonight, but maybe the most important guy was Tariq [Archibald], who only had one turnover versus a very high-pressure defense and kept the offense flowing smoothly all night," Griffin stated. "Redic continues to play like a Freshman of the Year candidate, and Kern and Matt continue to play strong.

"When our defense is as good as it was tonight and we take care of the ball, we become a pretty formidable team."

Roosevelt hosts Holy Cross (Ind.) at the Goodman Center this Saturday at 3 p.m.
