Men's Basketball Defeats 18th-Ranked St. Ambrose, 84-78

Box Score

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Jake Ludwig scored 18 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to pace the Roosevelt men's basketball team past 18th-ranked St. Ambrose, 84-78, at Lee Loman Arena on Thursday evening.

Ludwig had six assists while making 12 of 12 attempts from the foul line, while Grant Gibson added 18 points and Bennett Fuzak scored 17 points to go with six rebounds off the bench for the Lakers (8-4, 3-1 CCAC).

Warren Allen scored a game-high 25 points to go with a contest-best 13 rebounds for the Fighting Bee (7-3, 3-1 CCAC).

St. Ambrose led for the game's first few minutes before the Lakers score nine straight.

Roosevelt clamped down on defense for the remainder of the half, forcing the Bees to shoot just 33 percent during the opening 20 minutes to take an 11-point advantage into the break.

SAU warmed up a bit in the second half, shooting 57 percent as Allen scored 19 points in the game's final period.

The Bees eventually rallied to tie the game at 56 midway through the second stanza, but Roosevelt did not waver and halted the hosts' rally at that point. The Lakers then constructed a 12-point lead in the game's latter stages thanks to Ludwig getting to the line and clutch scoring late from Gibson.

"This was the Webster's Dictionary definition of a road win," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said after the victory. "The foul disparity [27-17] was unlike any Roosevelt game I've seen in years. I can't recall the last time our team has committed 27 fouls in a game that we had the lead for the majority of the time. The crowd was rowdy and St. Ambrose is talented, but we made all the plays and hit all the free throws. Ludwig, Bennett and Grant really busted it open for us, and our first half defense was great.

"If we could have rebounded we could have put them away earlier, but our inability to rebound was our one deficiency in a game where we were very good in most areas."

Roosevelt's CCAC road trip continues at Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee this Saturday.
