CHICAGO – Jake Asquini set a new school record by making nine three-pointers and scoring a game-high 27 points, pacing the Roosevelt men's basketball team to a 97-57 win over Trinity Christian at the Goodman Center on Saturday.
Asquini broke his previous school mark of eight treys made in a single game, set last season against East-West, by burying all but three of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc to help the Lakers (9-5, 4-2 CCAC) cruise to victory. The senior guard from St. Charles missed tying his career-high for points in a single game by just one.
Roosevelt made 17 triples as a team, three shy of the school record of 20, to overwhelm the guests from the start.
The Lakers jumped out to an 11-2 lead and eventually made five consecutive threes in the game's early moments.
Roosevelt used that three-point string to make nine of 11 tries and finish the first half with 11 treys and a commanding 23-point lead that only ballooned after intermission.
Grant Gibson added 15 points and five steals, Jake Ludwig had 11 points and nine assists, and Chandler Fuzak added 11 points to go with nine boards.
Josh Decker led Trinity Christian (4-11, 1-6 CCAC) with 13 points and seven rebounds.
"What a way to go into the break," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "That was the most complete game we've played all year and it resulted in a big conference win for us. It was only a matter of time before Asquini shot like we all know he can, and he really helped us bust open the game.
"Our intensity and togetherness were very good, and it was very fulfilling to see a lot of new players make contributions, because those guys are so great in practice and are such an integral part of our team," Griffin said.
Roosevelt takes some time off before hitting the hardwood on Dec. 29 to open the Roosevelt New Year's Classic at the Goodman Center against Indiana Kokomo at 5 p.m.
