INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Newcomer Bennett Fuzak scored a team-high 19 points in 19 minutes off the bench, but the Roosevelt men's basketball team could not stop eighth-ranked Marian (Ind.) on the Knights' home court in a 95-63 loss inside Marian's Physical Education Center on Saturday.
Fuzak connected three times from downtown and finished 5-of-10 from the floor while fellow newcomer DeAnte Barnes debuted with eight points for the Lakers (0-2).
Chandler Fuzak added seven points and three blocks while Jake Ludwig had six points and five assists.
Four Knights tallied at least 14 points, with Wes Stowers pacing all scorers with 23 points and adding 10 assists for Marian (2-0).
Roosevelt roared back from an early 10-point deficit and led 30-28 with 2:22 on the clock when Marian closed out the first half with a 14-3 run to take a nine-point advantage into the break.
The Lakers got within six early in the second half, but the Knights continued to shoot a strong clip from the field, connecting on 55 percent from the floor in the second period, as Roosevelt struggled with a sub-30 percent shooting percentage in that final 20 minutes.
"Despite the lopsided score, we did see a few bright spots in this game as we continue to find out what we are this year," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "Marian has every piece you need to win a national championship and they displayed it today. I liked our competitiveness the first 19 minutes of the game, but after that they simply pounded us.
"We get another shot at the Crossroads [League] on Tuesday."
Roosevelt will open its home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Marian's fellow Crossroads member Bethel (Ind.) at 6 p.m. inside the Goodman Center.
