Men's Basketball Pulls Away Late To Win At Calumet St. Joseph

WHITING, Ind. – The Roosevelt men's basketball team surged in the latter half of the second period to break open what had been a close game and defeat Calumet St. Joseph, 73-57, at the Rittenmeyer Center on Saturday afternoon.

Jake Ludwig led the Lakers (15-4, 6-3 CCAC) with 13 points, while Grant Gibson added 12 points and Jake Asquini contributed 11 points.

Every Laker who played scored at least three points and at least one field goal.

Joshua Dillingham led all players with 11 rebounds in his second game back from injury, while Adam Alexander pulled down eight boards as the Lakers cleaned up on the glass to the tune of 43 caroms, 16 more than the hosts.

Devin Harrison scored a game-high 18 points and Jose Ramirez tallied 17 for the Crimson Wave (10-5, 4-4 CCAC).

The Lakers started to create some distance around the midway point of the second half in a contest that had been separated by single digits most of the way. Roosevelt's defense took over, allowing just a single CCSJ point during a late five-minute span to help the guests open the floodgates and construct a 23-point lead.

"This was the biggest win of our season so far," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "We have a lot of respect for CCSJ and they've been to where we want to go in terms of the national tournament [in 2016-17]. We knew we needed to be at our toughest and we played very tough, especially in the second half. It's great to start winning rebounding battles again and it's evident how much we've been waiting for Josh to return with his 11 boards. Everyone scored at least three points and we really defended well at 32 percent from the field.

"It was also great irony to finally win in this building and knowing that the first game in building this program was here seven years ago, so this was a special win."

Roosevelt hosts Holy Cross (Ind.) at the Goodman Center this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
