CHICAGO – Jake Asquini sank eight three-pointers to score a career-high 28 points, leading the Roosevelt men's basketball team to a season-opening 85-69 win over East-West (Ill.) inside the Goodman Center on Wednesday evening.
Fellow St. Charles native and backcourt mate Jake Ludwig scored 18 points while handing out a game-high 10 assists and pulling down eight boards as the Lakers (1-0) held off a pesky East-West side (2-0) that was led by Sherman Carter's 30 points.
"This was a great test tonight against a much-improved East-West team," said Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin. "They really caught us off guard with their three-point shooting as they shot 1-for-27 from three against Madonna but caught fire here by making 14 threes, and that kept them in the game. Our defense has to get better and we have to rebound better. Asquini was terrific and really bailed us out, and Ludwig was two rebounds away from a triple-double and did a great job of closing the game."
Griffin knows Sunday's home game against Marian (Ind.) will provide another stern early-season challenge for his Lakers.
"The competition will be stiffer this Sunday vs Marian, whose first two games have been at Indiana and at Indiana State, so they'll be coming into the Goodman with a lot of confidence."
