NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Another huge game from Joshua Dillingham and big late buckets made by Kyle Bumbalough sent the Roosevelt men's basketball team to a 70-66 win over Holy Cross (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon.
Dillingham led all players in points (20) and rebounds (11) for his sixth double-double of the season, while Jake Ludwig added 18 points and Bumbalough scored four of his six points in the final 2:27 to keep the Lakers (9-12, 5-7 CCAC) in the lead and en route to their first CCAC road win of the year.
Chandler Fuzak added eight points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor off the bench.
Ryan Lutz led the host Saints (10-11, 6-6 CCAC) with 17 points.
Roosevelt's long-distance game struggled, as the Lakers made just 2 of 14 from three-point range, but the Green and White thrived inside and shot 62 percent inside the arc behind the efficient frontcourt work of Dillingham (9-for-11), Fuzak and Adam Alexander (2-for-2).
The Lakers led the close game 64-61 late when a Bumbalough bucket made it a two-possession game, which was important as Nate Miller made it a two-point game shortly after that shot with a three-pointer.
Clinging to a two-point lead, the Lakers got more breathing room from Bumbalough on a basket with 37 seconds left in regulation.
The Lakers' defense tightened, as Roosevelt forced the Saints to miss four consecutive shots within a 14-second span on the same possession before Alexander finally corralled a rebound and went to the line to make two free throws with eight ticks left.
Roosevelt allowed just a two-point bucket with a second left on the clock, allowing the Lakers to hold on for their third win in the last four games.
"It was a tale of two halves," Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin said. "In the first we simply didn't defend and were cold on offense, and in the second half we played tough D and were very efficient on offense, especially with Josh down low and Jake's drives. We were only 2-of-14 from three, but when you can defend and rebound like we did in the second half, you can overcome cold shooting. This was a huge win on the road versus a very tough Holy Cross team.
"We are excited for Chicago State and Alumni Day [on Jan. 21] next week."
Roosevelt briefly steps out of regular-season play for a Jan. 18 road tilt at NCAA Division I Chicago State.
