WHITING, Ind. – A gritty CCAC matchup went the way of host Calumet St. Joseph as the Roosevelt men's basketball team couldn't overcome the Crimson Wave late in a 62-58 loss on Saturday.
Jake Ludwig scored a team-high 15 points, while Adam Alexander scored 10 to go with six rebounds off the bench for the Lakers (3-4, 1-1 CCAC).
Jose Ramirez led all scorers with 21 off the bench for CCSJ (6-2, 2-0 CCAC).
Neither team shot particularly well, with both sides at around 34 percent, but the Lakers couldn't pull down as many of the misses with a 10-board disadvantage.
The Lakers couldn't deliver from downtown, either, making seven shots in 28 attempts from beyond the arc.
Roosevelt nursed a slim lead as the late stages of the second half approached, but the Crimson Wave took advantage of Laker fouls and turnovers and pulled away at the charity stripe with eight of their 20 makes coming in the final five-plus minutes.
The Lakers were still in the game and got within three on Korey Ryan's trey with 15 seconds left, and Johnny Baldwin split a pair at the line with nine ticks remaining for a four-point game.
Ryan missed another late attempt from deep, and that was the ballgame.
"Our fouls and giving up offensive rebounds were atrocious," said Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin. "Add that to seven of 28 from three that were wide-open looks and it's crazy we only lost by four and had a chance to tie at the end. What kept us in the game were good fight and good scouting and defense.
"If we can keep defending, hopefully our rebounding will come and we can get smarter on our fouls."
Roosevelt plays an exhibition at NCAA Division I UIC this Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion at 525 S. Racine.
