BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Roosevelt men's basketball team was unable to replicate its winning magic from last year's CCAC quarterfinal against Olivet Nazarene at McHie Arena on Saturday, as the Lakers suffered a 77-44 loss to the host Tigers.
Tyree York and Korey Ryan scored 12 points each to lead the Lakers (13-8, 7-4 CCAC), who shot just under 29 percent for the game in a reversal of fortune from this past Wednesday's 55-percent effort in a win at Indiana-South Bend.
Reigning CCAC Player of the Week Aaron Larson led all scorers with 19 points to pace the Tigers (15-7, 9-2 CCAC), who had better luck from the field with 68 percent first-half shooting en route to a total clip of 46 percent.
Joe Harks scored the first bucket of the first meeting between the two teams since Roosevelt upset Olivet in an overtime thriller in Bourbonnais to advance to the CCAC semis last February, but from there the Tigers went on a decisive 17-0 run to take control of the contest. The Lakers went 0-for-8 on the shooting front with three turnovers during that rough stretch.
Olivet took a 21-point lead into the break and wouldn't look back as Roosevelt struggled to get the basketball into the cup.
The Tigers held a distinct advantage on the glass, as the hosts grabbed 20 offensive rebounds alone while the Lakers mustered just 28 total boards.
"The box score says it all in this one," said Roosevelt head coach Joe Griffin. "Twenty offensive rebounds is hard to overcome. It seemed like the missed fee throw was their best offense at times. Our effort was good, but maybe our technique was off. We were cold on offense the whole night, which was opposite of our South Bend game. I guess the law of averages caught up to us tonight."
Roosevelt hosts Trinity International next Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Goodman Center for a 3 p.m. conference tilt.
