INDIANAPOLIS – A historic Saturday helped earn Mark Zmojdzin the Offensive Player of the Week honor from the Great Lakes Valley Conference for the second time this season.
The senior from Prospect Heights, Ill. set the Roosevelt single-game record with 25 kills in Saturday's match at Quincy and swung a .413 in the four-set loss. On Friday, Zmojdzin came alive to score 13 of his 17 kills in the final three sets to lift the Lakers to a five-set comeback over the Hawks. Zmojdzin finished the weekend split with 42 kills and a .329 hitting percentage, an average of 4.67 kills per set. Â
"Mark is a warrior and I am super proud of him," Roosevelt head coach Kelly Magliano said. "He's most deserving of this acknowledgement with his strong play this season. Mark is a key reason why we have played good volleyball to start conference play and I am excited to see where the rest of this season takes us."
Zmojdzin currently leads the GLVC with 3.77 kills per set and second in total kills at 275, but those stats are even better in conference play, where he leads the league with 4.06 kills per set and 130 total kills. His 3.77 kills per set this season would rank 13th nationally and he would rank 11th in total kills in the country.
Roosevelt returns home Friday and Saturday for a pair of big matchups against GLVC-leading Maryville as the hunt for the conference tournament heats up. The Lakers are currently tied for the third seed in the tournament at 6-2 in the league, two games behind the unbeaten Saints. Friday's match will begin at 6 p.m. then Saturday's match is a 2 p.m. first serve at the Goodman Center.
