Lakers Shock Hawks With Five-Set Comeback

QUINCY, Ill. – The dance party was alive on the Roosevelt bench Friday, but the referee was still looking at the review monitor.

As it stood on the court, the Lakers had pulled off the improbable and reverse-swept Quincy on the road. The six Lakers on the court paced around their half of the rectangle as the bench danced on, keeping the energy alive as the review went on and on.

After more than two minutes at the screen, the referee returned and pointed towards the Lakers – and the party on the bench rushed onto the court. Roosevelt accomplished something the program hasn't done since its inaugural season in 2017, coming back from two sets down to stun Quincy 3-2 on Friday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match. The victory extended the Lakers' win streak to six straight matches and kept them in a tie for second in the GLVC standings at the midway point of the conference slate.

The entire scene seemed highly unlikely about an hour beforehand when the Hawks finished off a 25-12 beatdown of the Lakers in the second set. Roosevelt (14-5, 6-1 GLVC) committed nine attack errors and recorded just four kills, a hitting percentage below -.200, and the Lakers sided out on just 32 percent of the time in the second set.

Having already lost the first set 25-20, it would have made sense for Roosevelt to begin looking ahead to Saturday and trying to earn a weekend split. At that point in the match, the Lakers had never led and hadn't even been tied except for at 0-0 to start the set. All the momentum felt like it was with the home team in a match that might very well end up deciding postseason seeding.

Roosevelt didn't actually lead for the first time until Simone Augugliaro put away a pass from Martino Bertagnoli to make it 7-6 Lakers in the third set. But amidst 13 ties and three lead changes, the Lakers held firm in the third set and won the final five points for a 25-21 victory that prolonged the match.

Kajetan Bieniek had two kills and Jonathan Stovring added a kill as well in the closing run, which was capped by a Mark Zmojdzin ace. Zmojdzin had six kills on 10 attacks in the third set and Augugliaro added four kills of his own.

Quincy started off the fourth set with a desire to extinguish all of Roosevelt's hope, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Lakers even challenged the final point of that stretch and lost it, but the review turned out to be a turning point. Stovring finished off a kill on the next point and Zmojdzin served up another ace to cap off another 5-0 run that tied the set and forced a Quincy timeout.

The Hawks won the next point out of the timeout, but it did not stop the train of momentum the Lakers were riding. Zmojdzin quickly tied the set with a kill, Augugliaro added a kill and Bieniek served up an ace to put the Lakers firmly in control. Roosevelt won 15 of the 19 points following its unsuccessful challenge, turning a five-point deficit into a six-point lead. It all became a mere formality at that point as Roosevelt extended the match with a 25-20 win.

There was not much Quincy could do to slow down Roosevelt in the fifth set as the Lakers roared to the 15-10 win. Bieniek had three kills and Zmojdzin added a pair as Roosevelt hit .462 in the final set. In total, the Lakers went from having an equal number of kills and errors in the first two sets to hitting .348 in the final three sets.

Zmojdzin again was the leader of the Roosevelt attack with 17 kills, though Augugliaro was not too far behind with 14 kills himself. Bertagnoli dished out 38 assists and finished with nine digs, though Simone Mondin put in plenty of work on defense as well with 14 digs. Ashton Stage was part of four of Roosevelt's six blocks in the match as well to lead the effort at the net.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will go for the weekend sweep Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Hawks in Quincy.
