Zmojdzin Sets Record In Loss To Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – Mark Zmojdzin set a program record with 25 kills despite Roosevelt falling in four sets to Quincy on Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match.

The senior from Prospect Heights, Ill. tied the program record two weeks ago with 24 kills against Southwest Baptist, and literally one-upped himself Saturday. He finished with a .413 hitting percentage in the match while his teammates hit just .054.

Roosevelt (14-6, 6-2 GLVC) and Quincy traded points for most of the first set as the teams were tied nine times and the lead changed hands four times. However, the Hawks broke the 16-16 deadlock with three straight points en route to a 25-19 win in the opening set.

Zmojdzin took over the match in the second set, dropping 10 kills on 12 attacks for an .833 hitting percentage to lift the Lakers to a 25-21 victory. After Quincy took a 9-7 lead, the Lakers responded with five straight points, three of which came from kills by Zmojdzin. He added two more kills late in the set to help Roosevelt pull away after the teams were knotted at 19.

The third set got away quickly from Roosevelt and Quincy cruised to a 25-14 win to move within a set of the match. The Hawks ended up with two match points at 24-22, but a kill from Andre Cippiciani and a block from Zmojdzin and Ashton Stage staved off the end. Zmojdzin then ended a rally with a kill to tie the set at 25-25 before the Hawks ended the match 27-25.

Cippiciani added seven kills for the Lakers while Jonathan Stovring blocked six attacks, including four solo rejections. Simone Mondin finished with 10 digs and Martino Bertagnoli dished out 37 assists in the setback.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns to the Goodman Center next weekend for a pair of matchups against conference-leading Maryville.
