Roosevelt Claims Two Titles At Warhawk Open

WHITEWATER, Wis. – A pair of Roosevelt entries won titles at the Warhawk Open hosted by UW Whitewater on Friday and Saturday in Wisconsin.

The duo of Juan Pablo Espinosa and Demille Scarabello won the second flights double draw with wins over pairs from Olivet Nazarene, Wabash and Lake Forest. All three matches were tight for the Lakers' pairing with 6-4 wins in the first round and final sandwiched around a 7-5 decision in the semifinals.

Lluc Mascaro Sierra took home the top spot in the No. 4 singles bracket with a three-set win over a player from UW Whitewater in the final. Sierra easily handled his opponent from Olivet Nazarene in the opening round then took down another Warhawks player in the semifinals before winning the final with a 10-7 victory in the third set.

Roosevelt had mixed results in the top flight of doubles with second- and seventh-place finishes. Justus Peters teamed up with Sierra to reach the final before falling to a duo from Olivet Nazarene. Chakib Madcur and Jules Rumeau dropped their first two matches before edging out a pair from UW Whitewater in the seventh-place match.

The Lakers' pairing of David Hofmann and Raul Vilarino lost to a team from Lake Forest before rebounding to place fifth. In the consolation semifinals, the duo skirted past Olivet Nazarene 7-5 before routing the Wabash pairing 6-1 in the final.

In singles action, Espinosa went 1-1 at the No. 1 flight with a straight-sets win over a player from Lake Forest before losing to an opponent from Olivet Nazarene. Peters gutted out a three-set win at No. 2 singles in the opening round before losing a nailbiter in three sets against a player from Wabash. The junior did respond though with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the third place match.

No. 3 singles nearly had an all-Roosevelt final, but Madcur and Rumeau were defeated by the same opponent from UW Whitewater in consecutive rounds. Rumeau won both of his first two matches with relative ease then took the first set in the final 6-4, but ended up dropping a tough third set 10-7.

Abhay Singh finished fourth at No. 4 singles after losing in the semifinals following his win against a Wabash player in the first round. Vilarino lost a three-set battle in the semifinals of the No. 5 flight and had to retire during the third-place match. Hofmann joined the crew of Lakers who won their opening match before losing in the semifinals by finishing fourth at No. 6 singles.
