BAY CITY, Mich. – Sophomore midfielder
Bella Perry earned her first career Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekly award Monday after scoring the first two goals of her career in Roosevelt's 3-2 win over Thomas More on Saturday.
Perry is the second Lakers player to earn a GLIAC weekly honor, but the first to be the Offensive Player of the Week. The Round Lake native scored in the sixth minute against the Saints with a 31-yard strike that perfectly evaded the goalkeeper's reach. After the two teams traded goals in the final five minutes, Perry broke the deadlock for good with a header on
Daisy Garcia's free kick to give the Lakers the win with two minutes remaining.
"We have had several players step up offensively so far this season and this week it was Bella's turn scoring two impressive goals in our win over Thomas More," Roosevelt head coach
Tom Czop said. "After playing predominately on the back line last season and missing our spring season due to injury, she is coming into her own in the midfield this year, establishing good chemistry with her teammates and helping provide another dangerous element in our team's attack."
Roosevelt's offense has significantly turned a corner this season with 10 goals in the first three games after scoring just eight times all last season. The Lakers have three of the top six point producers in the league this year with Garcia leading the GLIAC with eight points. Perry is up to four points after her two-goal effort and
Carisma Rosales is up to five points after adding a goal in the win over Thomas More. The trio are also three of only eight players in the conference with multiple goals this season.
The offense will be put the test Friday as the Lakers welcome the reigning GLIAC champions, Northern Michigan, to Morris Field for the conference opener at 1 p.m.
