ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt could not overcome Michigan Tech's deluge in the first half as the Lakers fell 3-1 to the Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Morris Field in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
It was a rough start for freshman
Wendy Magdaleno through no fault of her own as the Huskies pounced twice in the first 15 minutes. The Chicago native was making her first start in goal for the Lakers, and made a pair of routine saves to help ease her into the game. However, consistent pressure on the Lakers back line led to a poor pass that the Huskies stole and buried in the 12
th minute. Then a handball two minutes later set up a penalty kick that Michigan Tech scored as Magdaleno dove the correct way.
Already down two goals, Roosevelt (2-3-0, 0-2-0 GLIAC) tried to halve the deficit before the intermission, but could not convert on its chances. The best opportunity came in the 25
th minute when
Carisma Rosales made space for herself and launched a laser that the Michigan Tech goalie dove to catch. The Lakers put all four of their attempts on frame in the first half while Magdaleno made two first-half saves. The freshman finished with three stops on the match.
The Huskies scored a third goal on a failed clearance right before halftime, and the Lakers came out energized in the second half. Roosevelt outshot the Huskies 9-5 in the final 45 minutes with four more attempts hitting the goal area. Rosales again had a great opportunity robbed as her rising line drive was snagged by the Huskies keeper.
Roosevelt finally struck gold in the 69
th minute courtesy of
Daisy Garcia, who drilled a free kick just outside the penalty area into the upper right corner. The goal seemed to bring some life to the Lakers as Roosevelt had its best chance of the second half shortly thereafter.
Rosales drove down the right wing towards the goal and saved it from going out on the end line before delivering a cross.
Kyra Cruickshank got a head on the cross and barely missed the open net, and
Lainey Canan could not muster enough power to re-center the ball before it went out for a goal kick.
UP NEXT: The Lakers remain at home Friday when they welcome Purdue Northwest to Morris Field to start a soccer doubleheader in Arlington Heights at noon. Last season, the Pride and Lakers drew the matchup in Hammond before Purdue Northwest eked out a season-ending win at Morris Field.
