ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt conceded an unlucky goal in the final five minutes to drop a 1-0 match to Purdue Northwest on Friday at Morris Field.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup was fairly even for the first 85 minutes with both teams finding quality scoring chances. Freshman
Angelina Vazquez looked confident in goal for the Lakers (2-4-0, 0-3-0 GLIAC), making three stops, including a diving save in the second half. Roosevelt forced just one official save from the Purdue Northwest goalkeeper, but still threatened with a few shots that barely missed the goal.
It was the Lakers who had the first golden chance to score when the Pride's keeper dropped a cross into the feet of
Kenna Wisniewski in the dying seconds of the first half. However, the junior's shot was blocked by a sliding Purdue Northwest defender and the rebound pinged around for a few moments before the Pride cleared.
The second half featured more of the same from both sides until the Pride intercepted a pass and were able to round Vazquez for the game's only goal. Purdue Northwest finished with a 12-11 edge in shot attempts and a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Daisy Garcia's low drive was Roosevelt's only official shot on goal, and the junior also led the Lakers with three attempts.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt continues its search for a first GLIAC win on Sunday at noon against Ferris State at Morris Field.
