ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt threw numbers into the box and got the bounce it needed to secure a 1-1 draw against Ferris State on Sunday at Morris Field in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Lakers (2-4-1, 0-3-1 GLIAC) fell behind in the 29
th minute and were working hard to find an equalizer before another obstacle was place in their way.
Carisma Rosales was sent off in the 66
th minute, putting Roosevelt down a player for the final 24 minutes of the match.
Yet the Lakers held strong and
Angelina Vazquez made some key saves to help keep the game at 1-0 until the dying moments. Roosevelt earned a corner kick with less than three minutes to go and brought almost all their field players into the penalty box for the kick.
Daisy Garcia served up a perfect ball into the goal area, and it bounced off a Ferris State defender for the tying goal.
Before the red card, the Lakers were buzzing to start the second half, forcing three saves from the Bulldogs goalie in the first 10 minutes. The two teams tied with 12 shot attempts, but Roosevelt put seven on target compared to just five from Ferris State.
Vazquez needed to be sharp in the second half as the Bulldogs tested the freshman quite a bit over the final 45 minutes. Ferris State won seven corner kicks in the second half, including five while up a man, but none of them threatened the Lakers thanks to Vazquez and her back line. The freshman also had to make an acrobatic diving stop in the 62
nd minute, and forced the Bulldogs to rush shots on a few breakaway attempts in the second half.
Vazquez finished with four saves in the game.
UP NEXT: The Lakers get almost a full week off before returning to action next Sunday at Morris Field against Parkside for a noon kickoff.
