Late Push Not Enough For Lakers Against Rangers

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt could not overcome an early deficit in an eventual 4-2 loss to Parkside in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Morris Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers were pinned back into their own half of the field for most of the first 45 minutes, and the Rangers capitalized with a goal in the 15th minute. Roosevelt nearly escaped the first half with just a one-goal deficit, but Parkside added a second goal with 1:02 left before halftime to send the Lakers (2-5-1, 0-4-1 GLIAC) into the intermission down by two.

A quick third goal for Parkside in the 52nd minute shocked Roosevelt into life, and the field began to turn in the Lakers' favor. After being outshot in the first half 10-4, Roosevelt held an 11-7 edge in shot attempts in the second half with five of those ending up on frame.

Kyra Cruickshank gave the Lakers hope in the 74th minute when she cleaned up the rebound from Daisy Garcia's shot to pull Roosevelt to within 3-1. However, Parkside answered less than two minutes later to extend the lead back to three goals. Garcia didn't quit, though, and fired a free kick from 27 yards out that the Parkside keeper could not keep from crossing the goal line in the 77th minute.

The Lakers had several chances to apply more pressure on the Rangers, but their chances barely missed the net. Bella Perry let one fly from more than 40 yards out, and the ball looked to be on a good trajectory until it went over the crossbar by a foot. Garcia also had a pair of free kick opportunities miss the net and Mayte Gongora couldn't get enough power behind her shot in the 83rd minute.

Angelina Vazquez made three saves in goal for the Lakers, including an important diving one early in the second half that kept the score at 3-0.

UP NEXT: The Lakers hit the road next weekend for a trip to Michigan to take on Davenport and Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Sunday.
