Lakers Can't Tame Wildcats In GLIAC Opener

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Daisy Hernandez-Loya scored two goals, but it was not enough as Northern Michigan defeated Roosevelt 4-2 on Friday afternoon at Morris Field in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

The Lakers went toe-to-toe with the two-time defending GLIAC champion Wildcats in the first half, as freshman Angelina Vazquez made three saves to keep the game level at 0-0 through 45 minutes. Northern Michigan only outshot Roosevelt 6-3 in the first half, but turned up the pressure in the second half for a 16-4 edge.

However, it was the Lakers (2-2-0, 0-1-0 GLIAC) who struck first courtesy of a strong boot from Hernandez-Loya and a little aid from the wind. Lainey Canan's throw-in found Kyra Cruickshank's feet, and the junior tried to spin through defenders but was fouled. However, the whistle didn't blow as the ball fell to Hernandez-Loya, who sent a shot from the right edge of the box into the air and it floated off the keeper's hands.

Roosevelt's lead did not last long, however, as Northern Michigan tied the game just 73 seconds after the Lakers opened the scoring. The Wildcats added a second goal just 23 seconds later to take the lead, but the Lakers had plenty of fight remaining.

Northern Michigan was in control of the ball in the 74th minute when its defense elected to play a pass back to the goalkeeper. Carisma Rosales hustled after the pass and pressed the goalkeeper and put herself in position to deflect the keeper's clearance attempt. The ball skidded to Hernandez-Loya, who made no mistake in putting the ball into the open net from 20 yards out.

This time, the equalizer stood for more than six minutes before the Wildcats reclaimed the lead then tacked on an insurance marker in the 84th minute. Vazquez finished the game with a career-best eight saves on 12 shots on goal while Bella Perry had the only other shot on goal for the Lakers in the match.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt stays at home Sunday for the second game of its five-game homestand when it hosts Michigan Tech at noon at Morris Field.
