CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. –
Bella Perry bookended a wild contest with goals as Roosevelt took down Thomas More 3-2 on the road in the team's non-conference finale.
Perry wasted no time putting the Lakers (2-1-0) ahead of the Saints with a crafty shot from 31 yards out just five minutes into the contest. Noticing the goalkeeper was off her line, Perry deftly chipped the ball over the keeper's head to open the scoring.
The match stayed 1-0 in Roosevelt's favor until the 75
th minute when the Saints slotted home the equalizer. Pure chaos followed as the teams combined for three goals in 2:45 during the final five minutes of the contest. Â
Carisma Rosales struck first for the Lakers with the remarkable individual effort that has quickly become a hallmark of her appearances for Roosevelt. She danced around the defense until she found room on her right foot to launch a laser into the top-left corner from 26 yards out to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes left.
Thomas More was able to respond almost three minutes later with another tying goal, but Roosevelt wasn't done fighting yet. The Lakers instantly smashed the kickoff downfield and began putting pressure on the Saints defense. It paid off when they won a free kick near the sidelines deep in Thomas More territory with a little more than two minutes left.
Daisy Garcia delivered the ball into the box, and Perry was on the other end of the pass to head home the winner.
Offense was not an issue for either side as the teams combined for 31 shot attempts over the 90 minutes. Roosevelt held a 17-14 edge in attempts with six of their attempts reaching the target.
Angelina Vazquez recorded one save in goal for the Lakers as only three of the Saints' shots actually reach goal.
UP NEXT: The Lakers open up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday at Morris Field with a 1Â p.m. matinee against reigning GLIAC champion Northern Michigan. Roosevelt dropped both matches against the Wildcats last season.
