CHICAGO – Five members of the Roosevelt tennis program earned Academic All-District distinction from the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive year
Justus Peters has earned the award, and it is the first time for sophomores
Victor Dorojan,
Juan Pablo Espinosa,
Malena Moya and
Teodora Petrica. All five played critical roles for the Lakers on the court this season during Roosevelt's first season in the difficult Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Dorojan held down the top spot in the men's lineup while Petrica did the same for the women. Espinosa floated around the lineup, but played the most matches at the No. 5 singles spot where he went 6-6. Moya was mostly the No. 5 and No. 6 slots for the women while Peters played at No. 4 most often for the men.
In order to be named to the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete not only hold at least a 3.5 grade point average as a sophomore or older, but also must have either appeared in 90 percent of a team's games or started 2/3 of a team's contests. The list of all-district honorees is then vetted by the CSC committee, who send out a ballot for All-American honors to the membership.
The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports in all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. It was established in 1952 and the honorees are nominated by CSC members then All-American honors are voted on by the membership as well.
