BAY CITY, Mich. – Roosevelt placed one player from each tennis team on the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention team, the league announced Friday.
Juan Pablo Espinosa was the Lakers' representative on the men's side while
Varvara Ogorodnikova was the women's selection. Espinosa is a sophomore from Mexico who appeared in 21 matches this season for the Lakers. Ogorodnikova is a graduate student from Russia who played in all 20 matches this year for Roosevelt.
Ogorodnikova predominantly played at the No. 2 singles position for the Lakers, posting a 4-7 mark at that spot. She was 9-10 overall in singles play this season for Roosevelt and was 6-10 in doubles action, largely playing in the No. 2 pair alongside
Malena Moya.
The Russian will stay with the program next season as the program's graduate assistant on the women's side.
"Varvara has been a great leader on and off the court," Roosevelt tennis coach Dominic Denardo said. "She has brought her experience from her time at Upper Iowa University and helped the team grow and learn how to get to the next level."
Espinosa played all over the lineup for Roosevelt this season, mostly as a singles player. He was a spot substitute in doubles with a 5-2 record, mostly at the No. 3 position, but made an impact in singles. The sophomore was 12-9 as a singles player this season, including 4-0 as the No. 2 player in non-conference matches and 6-6 at No. 5.
"Juan Pablo has been an integral part of the Roosevelt program," Denardo said. "As a captain JP has helped lead the program on and off the court. He continues to improve every day and is the embodiment of what a Roosevelt athlete should be."
