AUGUSTA, Mich. – Freshman
Pierre Heylen was one of four players to finish under par in both rounds as Roosevelt turned head with a fifth-place finish in its debut at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Michigan.
Heylen finished in third place in the medalist competition after consecutive 69s in Friday's first round and Saturday's second round. The opening round did not start great for Heylen, who carded a bogey on two of his first five holes, but he rebounded with five birdies – four on the back nine – to put himself in second place Friday.
The Frenchman was one of two Lakers to finish under par in Friday's round to lift Roosevelt to its first team round under par in nearly five years.
Thomas Peluchon made four birdies to shoot a 1-under 71 Friday while
Matthew Webb shot a 73 and
Marc Waller carded a 74. The Lakers were one of three teams to finish under par in the opening round, putting them in position to qualify for the match play portion of the championships.
Roosevelt had a strong day Saturday as well, finishing in the middle of the field with a team total of 5-over, but the Lakers finished two shots back of the top-four positions. Heylen again led the way for the Lakers, combatting an early bogey with four birdies to finish in third place. He again got stronger as the round went on with three birdies on the back nine, including one of just 10 birdies all week on the par-3 17
th.
Waller shot an even-par 72 to finish 16
th overall at 2-over for the tournament. He rebounded from a rare double bogey on the 10
th hole with birdies on the 11
th and 13
th holes to get back to 1-under for the day after an early birdie on No. 4. Webb finished 21
st at 3-over for the tournament after shooting a 74 on Saturday while Peluchon dropped to 27
th after a 78.
