CHICAGO – Six Roosevelt soccer student-athletes were named Academic All-District honorees by College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday.
There were several new names on the list with just two returning honorees from last year – men's soccer junior midfielder Noah Vasilev and senior forward Oskar Schuster. It is the second honor for Vasilev and it is the third for Schuster, who was also an Academic All-America nominee last year. Senior defender Valdemar Nambo rounded out the trio from the men's soccer team to earn his first honor.
On the women's side, Lainey Canan was named Academic All-District for the first time alongside sophomore Bella Perry and junior Alex Creel. Perry was in her first year of eligibility as a sophomore while Canan was ineligible last season as a transfer and Creel did not qualify athletically.
In order to be named to the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete not only hold at least a 3.5 grade point average as a sophomore or older, but also must have either appeared in 90 percent of a team's games or started 2/3 of a team's contests. The list of all-district honorees is then vetted by the CSC committee, who send out a ballot for All-American honors to the membership.
This year, Nambo and Vasilev were advanced onto the Academic All-American ballot after both were named second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season. It is the first time Nambo has been advanced on the ballot while it is the second straight year Vasilev has made the cut. The Academic All-American teams will be announced on Dec. 16 with the ballots due on Dec. 2.
The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports in all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. It was established in 1952 and the honorees are nominated by CSC members then All-American honors are voted on by the membership as well.
