ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt battled for 90 minutes against No. 6 Grand Valley State but came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision Tuesday in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals in Michigan.
The eighth-seeded Lakers faced off against the conference champions and held their own while being backstopped by senior Roxy Herrera. When the Chicago native made her first save 19 minutes into the game, she reached 300 in her Roosevelt career. She then added nine more to finish with 10 saves for her eighth career match with double-digit saves.
Much of the game was played in Roosevelt's defensive half as Grand Valley State put 32 shot attempts towards Herrera and the Lakers goal. It was an even split between the two halves with 16 attempts each half, but Roosevelt held strong until the 73rd minute. After going down, Roosevelt had both of it shot attempts and came close to tying the match, but the crossing attempt was blocked.
In addition to Herrera, Tuesday was the final match in a Lakers uniform for several impactful seniors. On the defense, Cheech Seuberling and Lainey Canan stood tall under the Grand Valley State pressure. Mayte Gongora played 87 minutes in the midfield in her 64th career appearance for the Lakers while Daisy Hernandez-Loya ended her three-year tenure at Roosevelt with 12 goals and 5 assists.
