Lakers Swept At Concordia Tri-Match

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Roosevelt never found its rhythm Saturday at the tri-match hosted by Concordia Chicago in Lake Forest.

The Lakers (5-10) dropped both of its matches in straight sets, struggling both on defense and offense. They didn't hit above .03 in any of the first four sets they played and allowed their opponents to hit at least .250 in five of the six sets.

In the first match of the day, Roosevelt had 22 errors compared to just 21 kills against the hosts, the first time all season the Lakers have had a negative hitting percentage for a match. Meanwhile, the Cougars hit .250 or better in two of the three sets to cruise to a 25-12, 25-21, 25-18 win over the Lakers.

Wabash hit .317 during its 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 win over Roosevelt in the second match of the day, including smashing 16 kills to just two errors in the second set. The Lakers did hit .189 in the second set and .143 in the third to raise their hitting percentage to .110 for the match.

Shawn McCarthy led the group with 22 kills across the two matches as no other Lakers player managed to combine for 10 kills in the six sets. Joseph Claffy had nine kills to just two assists in the two matches, and also had three blocks against Concordia. McCarthy had a pair of blocks in each of the two matches while Christopher Fermaintt had 24 combined digs.

The Lakers lost the first four points against Concordia and six of the first seven points in the opening set, and never recovered. Roosevelt actually held a 15-13 lead in the second set before losing nine of the next 11 points. In the final set, the Lakers were highly competitive with the Cougars until losing the final six points of the match, the first time it trailed by more than three points the entire set.

Roosevelt bounced back strong to start off the match against Wabash, matching the Little Giants swing for swing. Yet after a 13-13 tie, Wabash won eight of the next nine points and 12 of the final 15 to cruise to an easy set victory. The Lakers rallied from an early 7-3 deficit in the second set to hold an 18-16 advantage before dropping the final six points of the set after being tied at 19. There was more fight in the Lakers in the third set as they won four straight points to trim a 21-16 deficit, but ultimately lost the final three points to clinch a straight-sets defeat.

The Lakers return to the Goodman Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to host St. Ambrose on First Responders Night.
