Box Score CHICAGO – Roosevelt's inconsistency caught up with the Lakers on Friday night in a straight sets loss to Judson at the Goodman Center in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
In the first set, the Lakers (5-8, 2-3 CCAC) looked ready for a tense battle in a back-and-forth opening set that the Eagles squeaked out 25-23. Roosevelt actually led 19-16 in the opener before Judson rallied with four straight points to reclaim the advantage. The Lakers had the set tied at 20 then again at 22, but could not finish off a long rally on Judson's set point to lose out on the first set. Overall, there were 10 ties and two lead changes in the opening set, compared to a single tie and one lead change combined in the final two sets.
Roosevelt didn't have the same fire to start the second set and fell behind 5-1 before coach Kelly Magliano called a timeout. The scoreline grew to 22-10 before the Lakers came back to life and started to play the clean volleyball that kept them in the match in the first set. The Lakers roared back to 23-15 to force a timeout from the Eagles then forced a second stoppage at 24-20 before Judson closed out the opening set 25-20.
The Lakers never really fired in the third set and the Eagles scored eight straight points to take a 19-6 lead. There was a glimmer of a spark late in the set with Terrance Young Jr. smashing down two kills sandwiched around a kill from Conrad Para that cut the deficit to 23-14. But the Eagles easily won the final two points to close out the match with a 25-14 win in the third set.
Once again, Roosevelt had its share of issues at the service line with 14 errors, several of which came on critical points in the match. The Lakers also hit -.069 in the third set with nine errors outweighing the seven kills in the deciding set. In the match, the Lakers had 21 errors, eight of which came from Para, who hit a season-worst -0.67 in the loss.
Shawn McCarthy had one of his better matches of the season despite the setback with a team-best 11 kills compared to just four attacking errors. The senior also played a part in three of the Lakers' four blocks in the match, combining twice with Joe Claffy and once with Young in the second-set rally. Tony Galeana led the Lakers with 27 assists and 11 digs while McCarthy had nine digs.
The Lakers are back in action Saturday at Concordia Chicago in River Forest for a tri-match. Roosevelt faces the hosts at 10 a.m. before returning to the court at 12:30 p.m. against Wabash
