Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Governors State in Five Sets Behind Jessa Henry's Triple-Double

Box Score

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball team defeated Governors State University in a five-set contest to earn both its first overall and CCAC Conference victory of the season on Tuesday, September 20.  The Lakers are now 1-3 in conference play and 1-12 overall this season.

The first set was a back and forth affair with Governors State taking a 21-19 lead late in the stanza.  However, the Lakers came back with four straight points, including a kill by Logan Cofield and a service from Alyssa Stilley to give RU a 23-21 advantage.  The Jaguars once again evened things up at 23-23, but RU scored the next two points with Jessa Henry coming through with the set winning kill.

Governors State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but Roosevelt scored five consecutive points to take a 6-4 lead.  Just like in the first set, the two teams traded the lead with the Jaguars coming back to build a 13-10 margin before the Lakers went ahead 17-16.  However, Governors State took the lead for good at 18-17 and went on to hold on for the 25-23 set win to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the Lakers broke a 4-4 tie and went on to build an 11-5 advantage before the Jaguars cut the deficit to 14-10.  RU once again took control of the set and pushed its lead to 19-11, eventually winning the set 25-17 to take a 2-1 match lead.

The Jaguars began the fourth set with the momentum after scoring the set's first four points, but the Lakers went on a run to close to within 7-6 and the two teams were tied at 17-17 later in the stanza.  Governors State used four RU attacking errors and two service aces to build a 24-17 lead and fought off three straight RU points to win 25-20 to even the match and force a fifth set.

The Lakers ran out to a 5-2 lead in the final set behind two kills from Jessa Henry, but the Jaguars once again fought back and took an 8-6 lead.  The teams were tied late at 13-13 before GSU scored the next point and served for the match.  However, the Lakers stood their ground under pressure and scored the next three points behind kills by Henry and Viktoria Marysheva to win 16-14 and take the match in five sets.
