CALEDONIA, Mich. – Roosevelt's season ended Saturday with a four-set loss to Davenport in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on the road.
The Lakers (2-25, 1-15 GLIAC) started off steady, matching the Panthers until Davenport ripped off a 5-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. The deficit grew rapidly after that run and the Panthers ran away with a 25-13 win in the opening set. Roosevelt took its first lead when Lihi Zaibert slammed home a kill to start the second set, but the set again got away from the Lakers and Davenport took a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 win.
In need of a spark to keep its season alive, the Lakers found some life in the third set. Zaibert again began the set with a kill then teamed up with Alessia Isgro for a block to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Roosevelt grew the lead to 7-2 before Davenport closed the margin and kept within striking distance. The Panthers would take the lead at 19-18 and twice led by two points, but Nekane Parera registered a big kill then Vivienne Merchant and Zaibert came up with the stuff to tie the score at 21.
After the Panthers reclaimed a 23-21 advantage, Roosevelt took timeout and came out of the break with a singular goal. Merchant and Abigail Wutka quickly tied the score with kills then Zoe Hutchinson joined Zaibert for a block to give Roosevelt a set point. The Lakers had all four set points in the third set, finally finishing a 27-25 win on an attack error from the Panthers.
Zaibert had four kills and three assisted blocks in the third set while Wutka added three kills as well to help keep the season alive for another set. However, the momentum proved to be short-lived as Davenport raced out to a 10-1 edge and never looked back in a 25-12 fourth set win.
Isgro led the Lakers with 10 kills, Zaibert added nine and Wutka had eight kills, laying a foundation for next season with all three scheduled to return next year. Isa Grana had 18 assists and four kills as she tries to build for her senior season in 2026. Cydney Martinez capped her college career with a team-best 19 digs and Hutchinson dished out 16 assists in her final collegiate match. Catarina Calabrese ended her career with a kill and six digs while Natalia Smiech had five digs in the first set and Parera finished with five kills. Â
