Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS – The Roosevelt University women's volleyball hit the road for it's first invitational tournament of the new year on Friday, August 26 as the team traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. for the Knight Invite on the campus of Marian University. The first day of competition featured two matches against the Shawnee State Bears and the hosts of the tournament, the Marian Knights.
The Lakers started off well in match one, taking control of a back-and-forth first set behind a five-point surge. Kills from Logan Cofield and Brooke Williams led to the Lakers scoring spree and gave the team a 20-16 advantage. With the Bears fighting back, Williams stepped up again, this time with two more kills to give the Lakers the first set, 25-19.
The Lakers were not able to carry that momentum into the second and third sets as they fell 19-25 and 20-25, to fall behind a set in the match. With their backs against the wall, the Lakers clawed back, taking an early 6-1 lead in set four. Kills by Emily DeBlecourt and Krista Norton got the scoring started for the Lakers. The team was able to stretch the lead to as large as six points at 13-7 and held on from there to win the set 25-21.
The final set started off close after a Nicole Darin kill put the Lakers on top early, 2-0. However, with the score tied at 6-6, the Bears capitalized on a pair of Lakers errors to jump ahead 10-6. The advantage would prove too much for Roosevelt to overcome as Shawnee State won the set and the match, 15-10.
For match two of Friday's competition, the Lakers squared off against the Marian Knights. The Lakers were not able to capture the same level of play that they did in match one, falling behind early in each of the first two sets as Marian jumped out to a quick 2-0 set advantage. Logan Cofield and Emily DeBlecourt were bright spots for the Lakers, leading the team with five kills apiece, while Jessa Henry paced the team with 11 assists.
The third set of the match was tightly contested as the teams remained with a couple of points until kills from Cofield and DeBlecourt gave the Lakers a 12-9 lead. The Knights bounced back scoring the next five points to take a 14-12 edge. Marian would not relent the lead for the remainder of the match, winning the final set 25-19.
